Lake Saimaa is the largest lake district in Europe.it is situated in southeastern Finland. Lake Saimaa was formed when the continental ice withdrew after the Ice Age leaving a freshwater basin behind. Now the Saimaa drainage region covers an area about the size of Belgium. The total length of the shoreline is incredibly nearly 15,000 km, and labyrinthine lake system includes 14,000 islands. The Saimaa Canal connects the lakeland with the Baltic Sea, as it enters the Gulf of Finland near Vyborg, Russia.(source: Wikipedia)
